Amber has spent her career diversifying herself. From joining the military to working at the Department of Homeland Security to traveling the world solo, she stays busy teaching herself new skills and creating entrepreneurial ventures. Today, Amber owns YOU NEED AN AMBER. She helps business owners create efficiencies, like systems and processes, so they can have more white space in their calendar. Amber is an avid adventurer; she has lived on 4 continents and has traveled to 40+ countries.
We’re pretty lucky to be Amber’s business home. She is a wealth of knowledge and is always ready to lend a hand or give advice. Her fantastic sense of humor brings a much needed sense of levity to those weighty conversations surrounding so many aspects of business, and her always curious mind inspires us to step outside our comfort zones. Plus, she makes a mean alfredo sauce and if there’s one thing to know about Firebrand Collective – other than that we’re a coworking space – it’s that we really love good food.
I’m so excited to introduce you to EVERYONE I know, so let’s dive in. Your business, You Need An Amber, allows you to work on the back end of a client’s business, freeing them to shine in their preferred role. Can you tell me more about your mission and what you hope to achieve for your clients?
My mission is to incorporate structure (systems, processes, automations, and workflows) for business owners. I truly believe that using the right tools, systems, and processes will impact business owner’s life by giving them more white space in their calendar so he or she can have a business that works for their life. Plus, free time gives all of us the mental space for creativity, new ideas, and time to process our day.
What’s your favorite aspect of being an entrepreneur?
Time-freedom. I want time-freedom more than anything else. I want the space to work from anywhere, at whatever time works for me. I always get the work done, but sometimes I just need to do it on my own terms.
You have a really fascinating work history: you’ve worked for “The Man”, you’ve worked for startups, you’re currently local, but have also been a digital nomad. Has working with small businesses influenced the way you operate your business in any ways that surprised you?
Small-businesses are soooo much more flexible and willing to experiment, which makes my job really fun. I think all business owners know there’s no right answer, but people like us aren’t held back by the “this is the way we’ve always done it” mantra. We are willing to experiment, to change our process, and to give something a try that we’ve never done before. It’s inspiring!
You are so right! Speaking of inspiration, let’s talk hobbies: you love to travel! You are literally a world traveler and spent a few years as a digital nomad. What do you look for in travel destinations when planning your adventures?
I look for accessibility when traveling. I like to be in one spot for a while, so I want to make sure I can walk most places, and I want to have access to hobbies. Currently, I’m focused on scuba diving. I’ve been diving since 2015, and I can’t get enough. I’m headed to Puerto Rico next month to dive as long as the travel goddesses are on my side!
You should probably know that I’m going to live vicariously through you, so post lots of pictures of those beautiful blue waters! Last question, straight from November’s Highlighted Member, Kelly Stromberg: What is your favorite book?
The English Major in my loves this question! My favorite book to talk about is Pride and Prejudice. The book that has inspired me the most is The Alchemist. My favorite book in the last 3 years is The Great Alone.
